Emergency School Closings

  • When weather conditions pose a hazard to the safety of students and staff, the Superintendent can make a decision to close school, delay opening or dismiss early.
  • To make this decision, the Superintendent consults sending district superintendents, county road officials, local police, the weather services and representatives of the District’s transportation service and transportation department. Current and predicted weather conditions, and actual driving conditions are all factors in the decision.
  • A decision to close school or delay opening is usually made by 5:30 AM. The decision to delay opening will be made when safe driving conditions are predicted for later in the morning. In this case, the opening of school will be delayed until 9:00 AM.
  • Decisions regarding school closings and delayed openings will be communicated via School Messenger and the Homepage of this website, as well as the media outlets listed below.
  • It is strongly encouraged that parent provide the district with the option to text these notifications as this has often proven to be the quickest way to share such information.
  • A decision to dismiss early will be made if weather suddenly worsens during the school day, or if a storm arrives sooner than predicted. In this case, students will usually be dismissed from school at 11:54 AM, although this may vary depending on the unique circumstances for each closing.
  • Decisions regarding early dismissal will be sent out via School Messenger and posted to the Homepage of this website, as well as the media outlets listed below.
  • In case of inclement weather or any other emergency, the following radio and television stations will broadcast school closings, delayed opening or early dismissal information:
    • HCTV Channel 27 (Hunterdon Central TV)
    • WCVH 90.5 FM (Hunterdon Central Radio)
