Emergency School Closings

  • When weather conditions pose a hazard to the safety of students and staff, the Superintendent can make a decision to close school, delay opening or dismiss early.
  • To make this decision, the Superintendent consults sending district superintendents, county road officials, local police, the weather services and representatives of the District’s transportation service and transportation department. Current and predicted weather conditions, and actual driving conditions are all factors in the decision.
  • A decision to close school or delay opening is usually made by 5:30 AM. The decision to delay opening will be made when safe driving conditions are predicted for later in the morning. In this case, the opening of school will be delayed until 9:00 AM.
  • Decisions regarding school closings and delayed openings will be communicated via mass notification system, the Homepage of this website, our Facebook and Instagram pages, and HCTV Comcast Channel 27.
  • It is strongly encouraged that parent provide the district with the option to text these notifications as this has often proven to be the quickest way to share such information.
  • A decision to dismiss early will be made if weather suddenly worsens during the school day, or if a storm arrives sooner than predicted. In this case, students will usually be dismissed from school at noon, although this may vary depending on the unique circumstances for each closing.
  • Decisions regarding early dismissal will be sent out using the same methods as mentioned above for school closings.

PLEASE NOTE: in the event of an emergency closing, all school activities, including athletics, will be canceled.
